Naming our kitten was a challenge. This beautiful furry little feline was part of our family and I wanted the right name, not just any name. The strength and qualities of our kitten soon became noticeable while watching it play and search our house. It was both invisible, almost ghost like, as well as right there when we were pulling a piece of string or yarn along the floor. Ultra fast reflexes and he seemed to "flash" across the room rather than run. I actually thought about "The Professional" because he was always on duty and right there when needed. A beetle crawled through a small opening in our screen door in mid July. It made it about four inches across the floor before "kitty" looked after that situation and he was only eight weeks old at the time. I checked on the history of cats and found out some useful information. Catt was the original Old English spelling. Our kitties are all thought to descend from five African wild cats dating back to 8,000 BC. Through adaptation and evolution the domestic house cat came into being. Where did we get all the kitten names? Our names come from all over the world. There are thousands and names and the list is growing. We anticipate over 25,000 or more kitten names in the near future! Why such a long (possibly the longest) kitten name list on earth? Why should anyone have to check several locations to find the perfect name? We wanted ALL the kitten names in one spot when naming our kittycat. Searching name list after name list, trying to make a complete list was time consuming and frustrating. We thought it would be great to have a downloadable, printable kitten name list so I could sit with friends while having coffee and talk about various name choices. Short kitten names are in and always have been. Short, simple names that are easily pronounced and easily heard ultimately work the best. HOW TO NAME YOUR KITTEN? Behavior - This is probably the most important characteristic for finding the right name. Watch your kitty's movements while it explores and plays. Mannerism - Cats have moods and mannerisms. The expression or way your kitten expresses itself is a big part of how your name selection typifies your felines "way of being. Talents - Your kitty may be a good jumper or extremely fast. Perhaps he or she is gifted at catching flies. Whatever ability your kitten may have that can relate to their chosen name. Popular or unique names? Both choices have merit but ultimately it is up to you and your pussycat. All kittens are cute, but, you have to think a year down the road when they are fully grown. I always liked short simple names; people names like "Molly" or "Sasha". A couple examples of popular kitten names. On the other hand unique names have the advantage of being distinctive and special. A rare kitten name as it were. AN "ALTERNATIVE" What we ended up doing was naming our cat and then added several nicknames as his moods changed. Most evenings he was like a ghost making several circuits through the house. We could hear him suddenly pounce and then a very brief struggle which was followed by his usual high speed "getaway". It sounded something like: "Thump! tickatickatick, click, click, click, thump, thump, thump and then silence as he pounced, struggled and then kicked it into high gear across a hardwood floor, then on to carpet and finally... who knows... he was quiet. Stalking? Or watching TV? Remember, the name you choose should suit your cat's mood, attitude and still be easily recognizable from a distance. NAME RECOGNITION The best way to help your kitten recognize their new name is to say it clearly and then give them their food at feeding time. Do this repeatedly and your new cat will accept their name and may even come running to you when you call. They will associate their name with something good and connect you calling them with you. It's a win / win situation and very handy if there is ever a mouse or insect in the house. NICKNAMES As I mentioned, you may select several well earned nicknames for your kitty like "Flash" or "Spaz". Our cat liked string or yarn to be pulled across the floor but shoelaces would do when nothing else was presented. Coming home and your shoelace is a little loose? Now you have a kitty and a loose shoelace attached to one of your feet. Hence the nickname "Ambush Kitty". My wife purchased a beautiful medium sized vase that came in a cardboard box. She set the case on the table and the box fell over. I dropped something on the floor and when I bent down to retrieve it I saw two eyes staring at me from inside the fallen box, "Box'O'Kitty"! The fun part about nicknames is that they can change over time. Your cat's name should be permanent so take your time picking out your kitties name and be choosey. Your cat will have the name you pick for their lifetime. Meow...! KITTY TIDBITS - A group of cats is called a "clowder". - Male cats are known as a "Tom Cat" or "Toms" or a "Gib" if they have been neutered (sorry kitty). - Unspayed female cats are known as a "Queen" or "Quean". - Distinctions are made between short hair and long hair cats. OTHER WAYS TO DEFINE CATS - Feral: Bitey cat (wild). - Semi-Feral: Semi-bitey (stray) - Pet: Friendly but likes catnip on Fridays (typical domestic cat) - Pedigree: Likes to watch movies about other cats (pure breed)
